University Cricket Challenge February 2017
Victoria University vs University of Canterbury for the Neil Wood Memorial Trophy
Early in our club’s history the university fielded a team that played against Canterbury University (or College as it was known at the time). A near-annual rivalry that continued from the early 1900s through the decades and eventually became part of the University Games before slowly fading in the last 10 years. THIS YEAR we sought to light the fuse on a new tradition in this spirit: a Victoria University XI hosted a Canterbury University XI at Kelburn Park in February.

2020 Match #2

The home side won all three matches and won the Neil Wood Memorial Cup (pictured). Neil Wood was a VUWCC Great of the late 70s and early 80s who won the Club Bowler of the Year in consecutive seasons. He was a favourite of our club but originally schooled in Christchurch with John Wright. Neil was taken from us at an early age but continues to inspire the club with his memory, so we believe it only fitting to recognise his links to both cities and play for this cup in memory of a fine cricket and superb individual. We hope to repeat this fixture next summer and build a new tradition of inter-varsity cricket for the new millennium!
A BIG thank you to Tournament Director Andrew Lamb and assistance from James Boyle (Kelburn Park Sports Association), the University of Canterbury lads and their Manager Shane Young who had a great time in the capital.
